Spirulina - A short review on its Phytonutrients,Arginine, GLA and Phycocyanin

What is Arginine?Arginine is an amino acid (non essential) that has numerous functions in the body. It helps the body get rid of ammonia (a waste product), is used to make compounds in the body such creatine, L-glutamate, and L-proline, and can be converted to glucose and glycogen if needed. Arginine is used by the body to make the nitric oxide, a compound in the body that relaxes blood vessels. Preliminary studies have found that Arginine may help with conditions that improve when blood vessels are relaxed (called vasodilation), such as atherosclerosis and erectile dysfunction. Arginine also assists in keeping the blood clean. Arginine is important for the production of (male) seminal fluid which is about 80% arginine. DXN Spirulina contains 47.6 mg of Arginine. What is GLA – Gamma Linolenic acid ?The human brain is around 80% fat. Nerve tissues in the brain need “healthy” fats in order to function properly, and GLA is one of the healthiest fats you can consume. That’s why human breast milk contains high quantities of GLA. In fact, breast milk is the # 1 source of GLA on the planet, and Spirulina is #2. Breast milk contains GLA because infant humans need to quickly build brain mass in order to boost their chances of survival. Spirulina is highly recommended for the non breast-fed. Spirulina contains 35mg of GLA.

What is Phycocyanin ?Spirulina is Blue / Green algae. Green being Chlorophyll (stored sunlight) and blue being phycocyanin (helps produce new stem cells in the bone marrow). Blue pigmentation in foods is extremely rare. The chemical reality of Spirulina’s blue colour is demonstrated by its eff ect in the nervous system and brain. Here phycocyanin (a biliprotein) helps draw together amino acids for neurotransmitter formation, which increases mental capacity.

DXN Spirulina contains 420mg Phycocyanin. Recommended is 3 grams of Spirulina per day for maintenance and prevention.
